More About the West Coast Region of the Western Cape in South Africa
The Western Cape West Coast stretches from Cape Town as far as the border with the Northern Cape at Touws River. All along this stretch of the West Coast coastline is a series of quaint historic towns and fishing villages with names like Lambert’s Bay, Paternoster, Saldanha and Langebaan.

The West Coast town of Yzerfontein is a small holiday and fishing village with a deserted beach ideal for suntanning and surfing.
The town of Darling is best known for its Wild Flower and Orchid Show in September and the Darling Flora Reserve are well worth a visit. In the centre of Western Cape's fynbos area you will find the quiet town of Hopefield.

The Langebaan Lagoon in the Western Cape West Coast is home to the West Coast National Park. This 20000 hectare National Park includes the offshore islands of Schaapen, Malgas, Marcus and Jutten and the salt marsh and mud flats are home to tens of thousands of birds. Over one third of the world’s population of Cape Gannet breed on Malgas Island.

Vredenburg is the business centre of the West Coast area of the Western Cape. The small fishing village of Paternoster has a beautiful, long, deserted beach to offer. Further toward the north of the West Coast region you will find the town of Velddrif, situated at the mouth of the Berg River. This estuary attracts large numbers of flamingos, spoonbills, avocets and glossy ibis. The Rocher Pan Nature Reserve near Dwarskersbos is also a must for bird watchers.

The main coastal town of the Cape West Coast is Saldanha which gets its name from the Portuguese admiral Antonio de Saldanha who anchored his fleet in what is now known as Table Bay in the year 1503. Saldanha Bay is an important iron ore export harbour as well as being an important fishing port. A brand new steel mill has recently been built in Saldanha and the bay houses the South African Military Academy and a naval training base.
