More About the South Coast Region of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa
The South Coast region of KwaZulu Natal enjoys year round warm temperatures and is known for its blue sea and golden beaches. Here you will find holiday resorts and residential areas situated amongst the sub-tropical forests of the South Coast.

KwaZulu Natal's South Coast is a scuba divers paradise with as many as 40 000 dives taking place annually at Aliwal Shoal. Protea Banks further south is considered to be one of the best shark dives in the world. The South Coast region also offers one of the finest angling areas worldwide. The region is also known for the Sardine Run where each year shoals of pilchards migrate from the Cape. Nearing KwaZulu Natal the sea currents bring them closer to shore with large numbers of predatory big-game fish following them and providing marvelous opportunities for anglers.

The South Coast town of Umkomaas in KwaZulu Natal is a popular line-fishing destination and is also home to a challenging golf course. Scottburgh is situated on the mouth of the Mphambanyoni River. This South Coast town was named after colonial Governor John Scott and was the first township to be laid out south of Durban.

Further south of Scottburgh, centered around Umzinto, you will find the sugar cane fields of the KwaZulu Natal South Coast. These fields were historically responsible for transport initiatives in KwaZulu Natal around the turn of the century. Its legacy of indentured plantation labour and immigrant traders from the Indian subcontinent informs much of today's South Coast society.

Some of the more important towns in KwaZulu Natal's South Coast include Amanzimtoti, Athlone Park, Bazley, Clansthal, Hibberdene, Illovo Beach, Ixopo, Leisure Bay, Margate, Marina Beach, Mtwalume, Munster, Oribi Gorge, Pennington, Port Shepstone, Port Edward, Ramsgate, San Lameer, Scottburgh, Shelly Beach, Southbroom, Southport, St Michaels-on-sea, Sunwich Port, Trafalgar, Umkomaas, Umtentweni, Umzumbe, Uvongo, Warner Beach, Widenham and Winkelspruit.
