The West Rand Region of Gauteng, South Africa
The West Rand region of Gauteng extends from Randfontein in the west to Roodepoort in the east, and includes the town of Krugersdorp. The areas of Carletonville and Westonaria are sometimes included as being part of the Far West Rand. The areas are economically linked to the city of Johannesburg through the gold mining industry. Carltonville, Krugersdorp, Westonaria, Randfontein, Soweto, Roodepoort and Magaliesburg are some of the better known towns in the West Rand region of Gauteng.

More About the West Rand Region of Gauteng in South Africa
The West Rand region of Gauteng encompasses towns such as Lanseria, Carltonville, Krugersdorp, Westonaria, Randfontein, Soweto, Roodepoort and Magaliesburg. Most of the towns in the West Rand have their origins in the discovery of gold in the area. Gold was first discovered in the West Rand in the 1930s. A mining engineer from the Gold Fields Mining Group, Guy Carleton Jones, after whom the town of Carletonville was named, played a big role in the discovery of gold in the area.

Huge parts of the West Rand are rural and these areas are characterised by beautiful scenery. In the area towards the far west of the region you will find the Magaliesberg and Witwatersberg mountains and the valleys of the Skeerpoort and Crocodile rivers. This is also where the Sterkfontein Valley is situated renowned for its archaeological diggings and known as the cradle of mankind.

The Magaliesberg mountain range in the Gauteng West Rand region is home to many world class hotels, guest houses and resorts. Towards the eastern part of Magaliesberg you will find the Hartbeespoort Dam which is a popular holiday destination spot offering many different watersports. The Magaliesberg mountain range is also popular destination for rock climbers and hot-air ballooning and hang-gliding are also available in this area of the West Rand.

The Lion Safari Park is situated nearby the West Rand town of Muldersdrift. This game park offers visitors the opportunity to see many different species of wildlife including a number of prides of lion in a fenced off area. The Sterkfontein Caves and Cradle of Mankind is also situated near this area. The area of Sterkfontein was declared a World Heritage site in 1999. Lanseria is home to the West Rand's airport, the Lanseria International Airport. In operation since 1972 the Lanseria Airport is ideally situated for corporate jets traveling to Johannesburg or Pretoria.

The Krugersdorp Nature Reserve is situated in the West Rand town of Krugersdorp. The reserves offers the opportunity to view wildlife such as lions, rhinos, hippo, buffalo, giraffe. antelope and buck. The Kromdraai Conservancy is an area underlaid by dolomite rock featuring many caves and sinkholes with many important anthropological finds.
