Parktown, Johannesburg, Gauteng - Accommodation, Property and Conference Venues ParktownSouth Africa > Gauteng > Greater Johannesburg Region > Parktown Accommodation in Parktown, Johannesburg, Gauteng Parktown in the Johannesburg Region of Gauteng, South Africa Parktown was established in 1892, when Florence Phillips rode north from the dusty mining town of early Johannesburg and found a ridge with a view over forests to the Magaliesberg mountains. She persuaded her husband to build a house there. Soon, many wealthy entrepreneurs were building mansions along the ridge, and showing off their newfound affluence with parties, croquet on the lawns, and lavish dinners. Parktown was where many conspirators of the Jameson Raid against the South African Republic were based. Today, Parktown remains one of Johannesburg’s elite suburbs, its Victorian homes, and a number of designs by Sir Herbert Baker, an enormous draw card to the area. The Parktown and Westcliff Heritage Trust have weekly tours of old Johannesburg, one of them in Victorian Parktown, which includes the oldest house in Johannesburg, built in 1896 called The View, in Ridge Road.
