Benoni, East Rand, Gauteng - Accommodation, Property and Conference Venues in BenoniSouth Africa > Gauteng > East Rand > Benoni Accommodation in Benoni, Gauteng Benoni in the East Rand Region of Gauteng, South Africa The beginning of Benoni dates back to 1881 when then surveyor-general Johan Rissik found it difficult to assign title deeds to all unclaimed state property. He named the area Benoni (son of my sorrows), after that given by Rachel to her son in the Book of Genesis. Sir George Farrar, the chairman of a mining company, undertook the beautification of the rapidly growing mining town of Benoni in 1904. Minewater was channelled into a band of marshland, and reservoirs stocked with fish were created. Thousands of trees were planted in the new suburbia and it achieved municipal status in 1907. The Benoni Country Club started initially as a 9-hole golf course in 1905. Three years later the course was expanded to its full compliment of 18 holes. Today Benoni Country Club is well known as a first class golfing facility with it's meandering tree lined fairways and greens. However the Benoni Country Club has greatly developed its facilities from purely a golf club. The Club is one of the most sought after Venues on the east Rand with easy access to the N12 Highway. There is a most impressive porte cochere entrance leading to an attractive foyer. The club offers excellent cuisine and a range of menus that may be adapted to individual preferences.
